Welcome

Hi! We are Lambeth Save Our Services, an umbrella group of local trade unionists, community organisations and students formed in 2010 to oppose cuts in jobs and services. We have done all sorts of campaigning against cuts to services in Lambeth, including rallys, petitions, marches, protests and even occupying the town hall, and we want you to get involved!

Housing Activists Film Night
Saturday 26th April, 7:30pm
St Matthew’s Tenants Hall, 10 St Matthews Road, Brixton, SW2 1NH
Let us know you’re coming on facebook

A night of films celebrating the struggle for decent housing in our communities (part of the Radical Housing Weekender).

As the housing crisis in the capital deepens – with homelessness on the rise, one in ten London homes overcrowded, rents far outstripping earnings, and private landlords running amok – join us at St. Matthew’s Tenants Hall for a reminder of what can be achieved through collective action against these problems.

We will be showing a series of short films which give an insight into housing activism, past and present, and aim to provide acknowledgement and encouragement both to those who are precariously housed and those fighting to combat this social ill.

The films will show contemporary projects, such as the campaign to save and expand social housing in Cressingham Gardens, and inspirational historical examples, such as the co-operative living spaces established by the Brixton Faeries in the 1970s.

In addition to the short film screenings, there will be an opportunity to hear from activists and local residents and, most importantly, for discussion. There will be people from a number of different housing campaigning organizations in Brixton the E15 mothers a group of 29 young mothers organising’ to stop the hostel they live in being closed are coming to say a bit about their campaign. We will more during the week.

The films should be interesting but just as important is the opportunity for us all to spend some time socializing and having fun.

There are drinks at the bar.

Support a HASL Member affected by the Bedroom Tax

Come and show support for a HASL member’s bedroom tax refund. We’ve had enough of being messed around by the housing office!

Join us on Friday 25th April, 11:50am meeting outside Brixton Customer Centre, Olive Morris House, Brixton Hill. Bring friends, family, neighbours!

Ellen is due a refund of the bedroom tax that she has been forced to pay for a year now, as she meets the criteria for the bedroom tax loophole. However, the housing office have not been all that helpful in getting this refund back to her.

The housing office have taken over a month to respond to our appeal letter and we only received the unfavourable response after chasing them up about this. The response gave very little detail or evidence of why this negative decision had been made.

The bedroom tax (one of many brutal welfare and housing cuts) is causing great hardship to the hundreds of thousands of people it is affecting. The refund offers a tiny respite from this stress and suffering by returning a small sum of money that should never have been taken off of them in the first place. It takes little effort from the council and will make a huge different to the people who receive it.

Join us to make our challenge at the housing office to demand the bedroom tax refund for Ellen and that our dealings with the housing office to be met with more respect.

Lambeth Save Our Services was one of 25 organisations who signed this letter that was published in last week’s South London Press

SLP letter

Thanks to all who attended the Save Brixton College protest. Over one hundred people attended and we got a write up almost immediately on the Brixton Blog and in the Brixton Buzz. The coverage in the South London Press took longer coming, but they did cover the demonstration in the paper that came out of Friday 4th April.

Protest – No To Clapham Park Evictions
Monday 31st March, 11.30 am
Clapham Park Offices, 91 New Park Road, SW2 4AX

Organised by Lambeth Housing Activists

What would you do if suddenly you and your family were forced out of your home after three years? Would you allow landlords to kick you down and let the council leave you to rot in temporary accommodation miles from your community? Would you stand up? Then stand up with us too!

Join us and Lambeth Housing Activists to support a recently evicted tenant to make a public complaint to Metropolitan Homes and Lambeth Council – we ask, why should a family be evicted from their home and yet the flat remains empty? Why is there a shortage of quality, secure, and truly affordable housing in Lambeth?

What are the priorities of this council and these landlords? Housing for homes, not as assets! Stop the gentrification of Brixton!

[UPDATE: Metropolitan backed down on 4th April and agreed to rehouse Ester in Clapham Park. More details here. Thanks to everyone who supported the campaign]

Lambeth SOS often gets publicity in the local press after our demos, but Stop Education Attacks have done even better and get publicity before this Thursday’s demo

  • There’s an article in the Brixton Blog
  • This advert has been running on Vibes FM, MetroLove Radio, OnTop, Lightning FM and London Hott Radio

Earlier this month the Lambeth United Housing Co-operative organised a photo call in defence of their housing co-ops. This event was extensively covered by last week’s local press. We’ve now received several follow up letters in this week’s South London Press. Congratulations to the Lambeth United Housing Co-operative for getting such good publicity
